Facebook Safety Center Offers Parents Tools

For better or worse (maybe much worse) social networking is here to stay. The number of teens on Facebook and the amount of time they spend on the site both continue to grow. The typical teenager in America now spends an average of two hours each day on the Internet. Time on social networking sites takes up 80% of the time. As a parent, it is a daunting task trying to keep up with all the changes in social media and figuring out how to keep your teenagers safe with the amount of information they share online. Facebook has created a new Family Safety Center to take some of the guesswork out of the equation.

The Family Safety Center is divided into four separate sections: Parents, Teens, Teachers and Law Enforcement. Each section addresses questions specific to that audience. It’s pretty forward thinking that Facebook would equip law enforcement officers with tools to prevent cyberstalking and tips for tracking sex crime offender who have registered with the site. But by far the most helpful section is the one for parents.

The Parent Section will help you to understand the basic layout of Facebook, how to set safe boundaries online, and how to address issues such as online etiquette with your teen. The Teen Section walks teens through how to set privacy settings on their profile, who to talk to if they are being contacted by a stranger, and the importance of thinking before posting. Reading through the short articles will both make you aware of the issues at stake (including the ones you don’t know about yet) and preparing you to bring up the these with your young teen. There are even articles to help you if, God forbid, your teen does become a victim of cyberbullying or a similar offense.

This is not meant as an endorsement for Facebook, but they are making it easier to start a dialogue with your young teen.  IF they are going to be on the site, now they can do so in a safe way. You can even do what our family did. Before agreeing to let your thirteen year old have a Facebook profile, make him read the information in the Safety Center then give him a quiz. If he passes, then he’s one step closer to earning the privilege (and your trust) to be on Facebook.
